The Death Of Captain Marvel: A Starlin Masterpiece

When comic fans talk about Jim Starlin, they usually refer to his Infinity Gauntlet mini-series or his Dreadstar series of books.

The Death of Captain Marvel deserves the same level of praise. It brought reality back into the medium. There are so many things in comics that force us to suspend belief. Most of them would never happen in the real world.

Having a major character die had never been done before. It was handled delicately by Starlin, and the story is a very fitting end to a rather underrated character.

The story has influenced other similar storylines at Marvel and other publishers. It still remains as relevant today as it did when it first hit newsstands.

Why is Annihilation: Conquest an important Guardians of the Galaxy comic?

Annihilation:
Conquest is a four-part miniseries that bridged the gap between
Annihilation and the modern Guardians of the Galaxy team.

The story featured the Guardians characters working together before Dan Abnett and Dan Lanning developed the newer line-up.

Featuring Starlord aka Peter Quill,
Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Mantis, Bug, Groot and Rocket Raccoon this
book stars all of your favourite GOTG characters.

Helping
revive the cosmic Marvel universe, Annihilation and Annihilation:
Conquest paved the way for our favourite galactic misfits to become the
team we now see in the MCU movie adaption.

How Do The Other Heroes Deal With The Death Of Captain Marvel?

Each hero deals with the impending loss in different ways. Some like the Fantastic Four and Avengers are sad but still happy to see their friend one last time.

Others, such as Spider-Man and Mar-Vell’s former partner Rick Jones react in anger. It’s one of the many stages of grief, and it shows how important his friendship was to them.

Towards the end of the story, some of Captain Marvel’s closest companions are gathered at his bedside for his final moments. We find the hero meeting his old foe Thanos one more time on the astral plane before going to his final resting place.

The ending is done in such a way that is very respectful of the character. It’s a very human finish for one of Marvel’s most loved characters from another galaxy.

How Was Thanos Defeated in Infinity War?

Thanos is confident that he cannot be defeated after beating more of the Marvel Universe such as the Living Tribunal and Galactus. Such successes make him over confident.

Ironically the step he takes to end his vulnerability is the one that backfired in the end. He decides that becoming an astral entity would fit in better with his almost divine status. He will not be vulnerable to physical attack anymore.

He forgot that the gauntlet was still on his hand, so if his body was found it could be removed. Nebula is the one who defeats him.

She locates his body and removes the gauntlet and puts it on her own hand. She banishes her grandfather and then works out what she can do with such supreme power.

Captain Marvel Says Goodbye

Knowing that nothing can change the inevitable, Mar-Vell begins saying farewell to the people in his life. He begins with his lady love Elysius.

With each goodbye, Captain Marvel starts to ponder his mortality. He wonders whether it’s better to know how many days you have left to live, or if it’s better to pass on unexpectedly.

The story begins with Mar-Vell realizing his own mortality. He starts off by recording thoughts for future generations and documenting his life history. He’s still known as a hero, although he’s not nearly as active as he once was.

Captain Marvel would fight a super-villain or two once in a while but had pretty much retired from that kind of lifestyle. He had no need to be a galactic protector anymore after the demise of his arch-enemy Thanos in Marvel Two-In-One Annual #2.

Mar-Vell travels to the space station base of his old enemy with his companions Eros and Mentos. They are on a mission to retrieve Thanos’ corpse when they encounter some of the former foe’s henchmen. The villains are defeated, but Captain Marvel develops a concerning cough during the battle.

When the trio arrives back on the Saturn moon of Titan, Mar-Vell reveals his secret to Mentos. He accidentally inhaled a dangerous amount of nerve gas during a battle with Nitro.

The gas had mutated his cells as a fatal form of cancer began to spread inside his body. Mentos is stunned by the news, but offers his assistance, all the while knowing there’s really not much that can be done to save his friend.

Mentos calls upon the assistance of other heroes, including Doctor Strange, the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards, the Beast and Thor, but unfortunately they are unable to overcome Mar-Vell’s form of what the Kree call “the blackened.”

All they can do is stand by their companion’s side until the very end.

How Is The Infinity War Comic Different To The Movie?

The reasons why Thanos does the very destructive things he does are described by different motives in the comic book when compared to the movie.

In the comic book he does things to impress Mistress Death. It is to impress her that he starts the quest to gain the infinity gems so that he can destroy half of the universe for her.

Not only does he destroy half of the universe for Mistress Death, he traps his own granddaughter Nebula in what is best described in a state of living hell for Death’s entertainment. He humiliates his brother, Eros for her enjoyment. He turns her fortress into a shrine for her.

Thanos takes on the Avengers to show his power. He turns the bones of Wolverine to rubber, sends Drax back in time to the Jurassic Era, whilst turning into glass and then shattering him. He also had Cyclops suffocated in an airtight container.

All these actions bring him to the attention of the remaining superheroes and that means they work on a way to defeat him.

What Is The Purpose Of The Gauntlet in Infinity War?

The gauntlet has the ability to create and destroy on a gigantic scale.

For Thanos, Warlock and the Avengers the aim is to retain the gauntlet and use it to bring back Eternity so that the Magus and doppergangers can be destroyed.

To distract the Avengers the double of Mr Fantastic detonates a gamma bomb outside the pizza shop they have met in.

That bomb does not cause as much damage as would have been expected as the explosion is contained by the Invisible Woman and the radiation from the blast is redirected into outer space.

The Magus and the double of Thanos then launch a surprise attack, giving the heroes the mistaken impression that Magus has formed an alliance with the Titan.

The heroes eventually locate Magus’ base and defeat the dopplegangers who were there and releasing their captive comrades.

Quasar gets there alongside the Ultimate Nullifier, joined later by Doctor Doom and also Kang the Conqueror. Doom and Kang were hoping to gain some power for themselves.

Magus stops the plan to defeat him by capturing Warlock and the gauntlet yet gets wounded himself during the fighting. He then loses the gauntlet to Doom and Kang who want to harness it’s power.

Magus discovers the cubes have been stolen yet still manages to defeat Doom who had already betrayed Kang. Doom attempts to persuade Magus to hand over the gauntlet.

However by that point Eternity has fully recovered and requests that the gauntlet is switched back on, and that request is granted by the Living Tribunal.

The reactivated gauntlet assists Magus in defeating Doom and Quasar is dissolved, and could not be saved by the Ultimate Nullifier.

What Is The Plot of Infinity War?

Andrew Warlock had considered himself to be a hero, yet his actions would unintentionally give Thanos his opportunity to destroy half the universe.

When he had control of the gauntlet, Warlock had used it to get rid of the good and bad parts of his being so that he would only make wise and logical decisions when using the gauntlet.

By expelling his good and bad aspects, Warlock brings back his evil persona, Magus. On his return Magus wants his revenge against both Warlock and Thanos.

First Magus decides to gain extra power to improve his chances of success. Magus collects five cosmic cubes, and uses the power from them to capture and contain the cosmic being Eternity. Then he creates his own realm as well as an army of evil doubles of all the superheroes.

The plans of Magus are worked out by Thanos after he finds the empty cubes and he decides to warn Warlock.

Infinity Crossover : Who Is Fighting Against Thanos

Thanos and his forces came to Earth and did not have the easy conquest that he would have expected. Against overwhelming odds the Illuminati held their own.

Wakhanda was successfully defended, the X Men were stopped by two of the Titan’s soldiers though it is not clear whether or not they had been defeated. The city of Atlantis had already been captured, while Namor lied to stay alive, with Mr Fantastic and Iron Man held the attackers back from the vantage point of Avengers Tower.

t was not Dr Strange’s finest hour yet he survived, on the other hand Ebony Maw seemed to have a lot of superhero potential and should appear in later adventures.

Yet the star of the show, or at least of the fighting on Earth was the Black Bolt. He had already been hiding and protecting one of Thanos’ sons.

Furthermore, Black Bolt has been plotting to find ways to restore the Inhumans to their full fighting power. Achieving that aim would make it more difficult for Thanos to get what he wants from Earth.

When Thanos comes down to Earth to discuss his demands, it is with Black Bolt he holds talks with. Black Bolt does a great job of talking for the whole planet.

What Thanos did not know was that Black Bolt and his brother Maximus the Mad had made preparations to deal with such a threat. At the core of the plan is the bomb that Maximus built, it is set off by the screams of Black Bolt.

Besides the explosives the bomb contained Terrigan Mist, which activates the full powers of the Inhumans and massively reinforces the number of defender Earth has. The mist also restores full power to Thanos’ son. It is a power that can rival his father’s.

This is a compelling story and it is intriguing to find out how Black Bolt does in stopping Thanos.
