James Gunn revealed that there is a secret script that only he and Vin Diesel have access to for Galaxy Vol I and II.
The secret script shows the words that Groot is really saying so that Vin can capture the right tone for each line.
Did you know that baby groot appeared in his own comic
series. In the “I am groot” comic produced by Marvel, Grood falls
through a wormhole into another dimension.
I Am Groot #1-5 (2017)
Writen by: Christopher Hastings Art by: F Flaviano and Marco D’Alfonso
Baby Groot must navigate his way through this strange wold billions of light years away from home.
As one comment from Good Reads offers:
It
must be quite a strenuous job to write a standalone comic book on Groot
or any sentient being which lacks the ability to express itself using a
mutually understandable language.
People who have interacted with Groot are gradually able to decipher
the meaning of the inflections and can carry on full conversations with
Groot as time goes on.
Rocket Racoon, Star Lord and the other Guardians of the Galaxy have no problem translating what Groot is saying.
In
the Guardians of The Galaxy comic book v2, #17, groot works with
Maximus the Mad, brother of Black Bolt on advanced engineering.
Maximus
makes a statement that whenever Groot says “I am Groot” that he is
offering a complex sentence using a variety of inflections.
It
is unclear whether Maximus was actually able to understand Groots
speech or whether this idea was a manifestation of his madness.
In
New X-Men #23 a telepathic link is established between Groot and Jean
Grey. She asserts that within Groots mind, he is working on complicated
thought processes.
Each time he says “I am Groot”, he is trying to comunicate intelligent thought.

The voice of Groot in the MCU movie was famously recorded by Vin Diesel. But how many times did Vin Diesel say I am Groot?
Vin
Diesel revealed that throughout the filming of Guardians of the Galaxy
he said the word “I am Groot” over one thousand times.
Although,
Vin could have recorded the three words once and edited them into
place, the actor wanted to make each use of the phrase emotionally
revealing.
As Vin Diesel describes his role:
“I
was really lucky, because I had a director, who is willing to indulge
and wanted to really capture all the nuances of this character. What we
know about Groot is that he’s got a wooden larynx so although he’s
saying other things, other than “I am Groot,” all the novice ears or
someone oblivious to his nuances of his speech can hear is “I am Groot.”
It
sounds like he’s just repeating his name. Because of that, when I came
into the recording room, there was a fifty page document that on the
left hand side it said “I am Groot,” and on the right hand side, it
would have a paragraph or a sentence explaining what he was really
meaning or what he was really trying to say.
And
so when you have that level of detail, when you have a director that
committed, when you have studio so hellbent on creating such a great CGI
character, I feel like I’m coming into a team…a winning team already.
And all I have to do is spend a week there in the ADR booth breathing
life into it,”
When the Guardians receive a distress call, teenage Groot is too preocupied with his handheld device.
Peter Quill: Groot, put that thing away. Now. I don’t want to tell you again. Groot? Groot: I am Groot. Peter Quill: Whoa! Language!
I am Steve Rogers
During
the battle at Wakanda, Thor is reunited with Steve Rogers. He
introduces Groot as Tree. Steve Rogers assuming that Groot was
introducing himself, offered his own name. Thor: Oh, by the way, this is a friend of mine. Tree. Groot: I am Groot. Captain America: I am Steve Rogers.
The Thanos Snap
When
Thanos collected all of the Infinity Stones, Groot was one of the heros
to disapear following the Snap. Rocket Racoon called helplessly as
Groot faded away. Groot: I… am… Groot… Rocket Raccoon: No, Groot… no, no, no, no! Oh… Groot. No…
